Setting up a wood-fired sauna heater
A wood-fired sauna is the original version of the thing. The crackle, the smell, heat that arrives in waves rather than at the flick of a switch. It also needs no electricity to run, which makes it the obvious answer for a spot at the bottom of the garden with no power.
In exchange it asks more of you at the setup stage. There is a stove to position, a chimney to build and airflow to get right. None of it is difficult, but all of it matters.
Matching the stove to the sauna
Wood stoves are sized by how much air your sauna holds, the same as electric heaters.
Too small and you will be feeding the fire constantly and still not reach the temperature you wanted. Too big and it becomes uncomfortable and hard to control, because you cannot turn a fire down the way you turn a dial down.
One thing to know upfront. Our smallest wood stove is built for rooms of roughly 6 m³ and up, so a compact two-person sauna may be below what any wood stove is designed for. In that case electric is simply the better answer.
Space around the stove
A wood stove gets extremely hot on every surface, not just the top. It has to sit a set distance from the timber walls, the benches and anything else that can burn.
Those distances come from the instructions supplied with your stove. They are not a guideline and they are not the same for every model, so do not copy a photo you saw online.
Most installations use a heat shield behind and beside the stove. A shield is a metal panel with an air gap behind it, and it lets you bring the stove considerably closer to the wall than you could without one. In a small sauna that difference is often what makes the layout work at all.
Think about the walkway too. People move around a sauna in dim light with bare skin, and a stove in the wrong corner is the single most common thing owners tell us they would change.
What goes underneath
You need something fireproof under the stove and extending a little way in front of it. Stone, tile or a proper hearth plate all work.
The point is that when you open the door to add a log, the odd ember will drop out, and it needs to land on something that does not care. If your sauna has a timber floor this is not optional.
The chimney
The chimney carries smoke and hot gases up and out, and it is the part people most often underestimate.
Where it passes through the roof you need an insulated section, so the hot flue is never in direct contact with timber, and a collar shaped to your roof. That shape matters. A barrel sauna has a curved roof and needs a curved collar. A pitched roof needs one angled to the slope. A flat roof is the simplest of the lot. Get the wrong shape and rain tracks in around it, which you will discover in the first proper downpour.
The chimney also needs enough height above the roof to draw properly. Too short and the fire is sluggish, slow to get going and inclined to puff smoke back into the room when you open the door.
Fix the stove position before the sauna goes up, because the roof has to be cut to match. On a barrel sauna in particular, moving the stove afterwards means cutting into the shell.
Where the smoke goes
Worth thinking about before you decide where the sauna sits rather than after.
Look at where the chimney will discharge in relation to your own windows, your neighbour's windows and garden, your boundary, and wherever you sit outside in summer. Smoke drifts with the prevailing wind, and a sauna positioned without thinking about that can become a source of friction next door.
Shifting the sauna two metres at the planning stage costs nothing. Moving it afterwards costs a weekend.
Airflow
Two separate lots of air matter here, and they are easy to confuse.
The fire needs air to burn. Most stoves draw this from the room, though some can take it directly from outside, which is usually better in a small, well-sealed sauna.
The room needs air too. You want a vent low down near the stove letting fresh air in, and another high up on the opposite side letting the stale, damp air out. That is what moves heat around the room instead of leaving it in a layer at the ceiling, and it is what lets the sauna dry out between sessions.
Skip this and you get a sauna that feels stuffy, heats unevenly and stays damp, which is how timber ends up going black.
Rules and permissions
Have a quick word with your local council before you install. Some areas are smoke control areas, where what you can burn and which appliances you can use is restricted. Some have rules about chimney height relative to nearby buildings. Requirements vary, so a five minute phone call is worth far more than an assumption.
It is also worth telling your home insurer. Most are perfectly relaxed about a garden sauna, but they would rather hear it from you now than at claim time.
Living with a wood-fired sauna
It takes longer to heat than electric, usually around an hour depending on the stove and the sauna. For a lot of people that is part of the appeal. Lighting the fire and waiting becomes the beginning of the session rather than an inconvenience before it.
You will need dry, seasoned wood and somewhere to keep it. Wet wood burns badly, makes far more smoke and tars up your chimney.
The chimney needs sweeping, typically once a year with regular use, and ash needs emptying once it has cooled fully.
Many people add a water tank to the stove, which uses the fire you have already lit to heat washing water. On a sauna with no electricity and no plumbing, that is a genuinely useful thing to have.
