How long will your sauna take to heat?

Estimate the time from a cold start to an 80°C, löyly-ready cabin. Heater output, hot-room volume, construction and the weather outside all make a real difference.

How this estimate works

The model uses the manufacturer rule of roughly 1 kW per m³, calibrates a correctly sized insulated sauna to about one hour, and adjusts for construction and the temperature rise to 80°C. Harvia advises a 1.5 factor for uninsulated log rooms. See Harvia’s heater-sizing guidance. The range accounts for stone mass, glazing, airflow, sensor position and door opening.

Frequently Asked Questions

Use the upper end of the calculator's range, then add 10 to 15 minutes the first few times. That buffer means a delayed commute or colder evening does not turn sauna time into waiting time. Once you know your cabin, a timer or app-controlled heater can have it ready when you are.

The heater is warming more than the air. Cold timber, benches, glass and stones all absorb heat before the room settles at temperature. Wind and ventilation also carry heat away faster, so a Leicester February start can take noticeably longer than a still July evening even with the same heater.

Not automatically. The heater must sit inside the manufacturer's minimum and maximum room rating. Too much output can heat the air before the stones are properly charged, giving harsher heat and weaker löyly. Correct sizing produces the better everyday sauna, not simply the quickest number.

Keep the door shut during warm-up, let the cabin dry fully after use, check that ventilation is correct rather than excessive, and keep the stones packed as the manufacturer specifies so air can move through them. A sheltered position and scheduled start often add more convenience than chasing a few minutes with a larger heater.

It is a planning estimate to an 80°C cabin, with a range that allows for stone mass. A large stone basket can need longer even after the wall sensor reaches temperature. On your first sessions, wait a little longer and test with a small ladle of water; clean evaporation rather than water running through is the useful real-world check.
