Thurso 150 Barrel Sauna
A private retreat for just two
About
The classic barrel shape, sized for one or two. Thurso 150 brings a 205cm diameter barrel format to a compact 150cm length, solid Spruce construction giving genuine thermal mass despite the modest footprint. The curved roof encourages even heat circulation throughout. A sensible entry point into barrel sauna ownership for smaller gardens that still want the authentic profile.

Delivered flat-packed for self-assembly, with free UK mainland delivery on qualifying orders. Allow a full weekend for assembly and have at least one other capable adult available to help. Larger, heavier and multiroom models may require additional time and lifting assistance. A solid, level base and suitable delivery access are required.
For a complete setup, select Professional Installation and choose your preferred date, allowing for the stated production lead time. We’ll then arrange the installation around your requirements, including any additional preparation or works needed to accommodate your sauna where possible. Worth running our sauna build checker before delivery day, and our heater size calculator to confirm the heater this one needs.
Inside, this sauna holds about 4.3 m³ of air, about the size of a small bathroom. To get that properly hot you want roughly 4.5kW of heat, and the Harvia BC45 Electric Heater Set is the one we'd point you at. Anything between 4.5kW and 6kW will do the job, so it comes down to how it looks, how you control it and what you want to spend. Our heater size calculator shows how we got to that and lists every heater that fits this model.
A heater this size runs off a normal household supply, but it can't go in a plug socket. It needs its own dedicated circuit, much like an electric shower or oven. Whichever heater you pick, check what it needs before you buy.
The heater gets wired straight into your electrics by a qualified electrician. Never a plug, never an extension lead. If you're near us in Leicestershire we can arrange the electrician for you for a fee, so it's all done in one go. There's more detail in our full guide to electric heater setup.
Two things worth doing before you buy: our running cost calculator tells you what a session will cost to heat, and our solar calculator works out the panels and battery you'd need if you'd rather run it from the sun.
Inside, this sauna holds about 4.3 m³ of air, about the size of a small bathroom. That's smaller than our smallest wood stove is built for, so this model really wants an electric heater. Our heater size calculator shows the working and what does fit.
A wood stove needs no electrics at all, but it does get extremely hot. It has to sit a set distance from the timber walls and benches, usually with a heat shield behind it, and something fireproof underneath in case an ember drops out. The stove instructions give you the exact distances. The walls are solid timber with no insulation layer, so it takes a bit longer to warm up.
The chimney runs up and out through the roof. This one has a curved roof, so you need a collar shaped to match the curve, otherwise rain finds its way in. The fire also needs air to burn, and the room needs a vent low down and another high up so fresh air comes in and damp gets out. Have a think about where the smoke will blow, in relation to your house, your neighbours and where you sit outside.
Before you build, run our sauna build checker. It checks your vents, bench heights, clearances and drainage in a couple of minutes and flags anything that'll cause you grief later. Our full guide to wood-fired heater setup covers the rest. It's also worth a quick check with your council, as some areas have rules about chimneys and smoke.
Barrel saunas need straightforward, regular care to keep performing well for years. After every session, leave the door open for twenty to thirty minutes to let the heat room dry out fully, the most effective habit for preventing mould and dark staining on timber surfaces. Wipe down the ergonomic benches once cooled, since sweat left to dry on the wood will leave a residue over time.
Give the interior a light sand once or twice a year wherever the ergonomic benches and backrests see the most contact. Leave the timber interior unsealed, since sauna wood needs to breathe and absorb moisture during use rather than sit under a coating that would trap it.
Externally, the curved Spruce exterior needs a wood treatment reapplied every two to three years depending on weather exposure, with the curved surface actually shedding rainwater slightly more effectively than a flat-walled cabin. Check the door seal periodically, and keep the area around the base clear of leaves and standing water, since pooling moisture against the lowest timber courses remains the most common cause of long-term damage on any outdoor sauna regardless of shape.
Production takes 10-12 weeks, plus 1-2 weeks dispatch time for pallet haulage. This sauna is delivered flat packed unless otherwise stated. Free UK mainland shipping applies. If your order exceeds standard pallet limits due to length, weight, or quantity, additional pallet charges may apply and are quoted separately based on postcode.
Deliveries are kerbside and unloaded using the vehicle's tail lift, so no machinery or extra help is needed on your side. For properties with tight or restricted access, we can arrange delivery on a smaller vehicle with the goods handballed off instead — just let us know your access situation before ordering.
Please have a solid, level base and clear access ready before delivery. Pallet deliveries are kerbside only, and once unloaded you're responsible for moving the goods onto your property. Final positioning is not included unless you use our installation team. A comprehensive assembly manual is included, and self-assembly is straightforward with basic DIY skills.
