The floor beneath and immediately around the stove may also require suitable non-combustible protection, particularly where there is a risk of embers or hot material falling from the stove.

A suitable chimney and flue system must be installed to safely carry smoke and combustion gases outside the sauna. Where the flue passes through the roof, the correct insulated chimney components, roof flashing and heat-resistant protection should be used.

Correct ventilation is also important. A wood-fired stove requires an adequate supply of combustion air, while the sauna itself needs sufficient airflow to provide fresh air, circulate heat and allow moisture to escape.

When choosing the position of an outdoor wood-fired sauna, you should also consider where the chimney will discharge in relation to your house, neighbouring properties, windows, boundaries and outdoor seating areas.

After each session, let the firebox cool fully before clearing out ash, and check it before lighting again to ensure good airflow for efficient burning. Drain and refresh the bathing water regularly depending on usage frequency, and wipe down the interior periodically, particularly along the waterline where residue collects. Check stave joints for any signs of leaking, especially if the tub has been left empty for a period, since timber can shrink slightly when dry and may need a fill or two to seal fully again.

Thermowood's heat treatment gives strong natural weather resistance, so the exterior needs little beyond an occasional check for surface wear. A light oil treatment every couple of years will maintain the original colour if preferred, otherwise letting it weather naturally to a silvery grey requires no maintenance at all.
