Size around the people who will realistically sauna together, then add one spare place. Buying for a once-a-year gathering means heating and maintaining empty space every week. A well-used four-person cabin usually creates more value than an oversized eight-person model that feels slow and expensive for two.

A barrel normally gives the smallest footprint and efficient heat circulation, which suits quick evening sessions. A cube gives upright walls, more headroom and often more glazing, which taller users and people who like to stretch out notice every time. Choose the daily comfort you value, not only the shape you prefer in a photo.

Electric is easier for frequent weekday use because you press a button, use a timer or start it from an app. Wood-fired adds the ritual of lighting and tending a fire and works where power is difficult, but it needs logs, ash handling and a compliant flue. The best choice is the one you will still enjoy operating on a wet Tuesday in February.

It can change how often the sauna gets used. A changing room keeps clothes, phones and towels dry, gives guests somewhere to wait and stops repeated trips through the house. A terrace creates a proper cool-down spot between rounds. If you sauna socially or through winter, both can be functional rather than decorative.

Treat the result as a shortlist. Confirm delivery access, a level load-bearing base, electrical capacity or chimney position, heater clearances and any local planning or smoke-control requirements. Those practical checks can change the best model, and they are much cheaper to settle before the cabin arrives.
