The floor beneath and immediately around the stove may also require suitable non-combustible protection, particularly where there is a risk of embers or hot material falling from the stove.

A suitable chimney and flue system must be installed to safely carry smoke and combustion gases outside the sauna. Where the flue passes through the roof, the correct insulated chimney components, roof flashing and heat-resistant protection should be used.

Correct ventilation is also important. A wood-fired stove requires an adequate supply of combustion air, while the sauna itself needs sufficient airflow to provide fresh air, circulate heat and allow moisture to escape.

When choosing the position of an outdoor wood-fired sauna, you should also consider where the chimney will discharge in relation to your house, neighbouring properties, windows, boundaries and outdoor seating areas.

Any applicable local requirements should be checked before installation, particularly where chimney positioning, smoke control or other restrictions may apply.

After every session, leave the door open for twenty to thirty minutes to let the heat room dry out fully, preventing mould and dark staining over time. Wipe benches down once cooled, and sand the interior lightly once or twice a year wherever group use creates the most contact wear.

The tempered glass door and window need only a standard glass cleaner and soft cloth. The built-in changing area should be checked periodically for dampness, particularly given the higher likelihood of more frequent group use putting more towels and robes through the space.

Externally, treat the spruce exterior with a wood treatment every two to three years, budgeting more time for this larger structure than the smaller pod would need. The arched roofline sheds water differently to a flat roof, so check drainage along the curve and base periodically, particularly after stormy weather or heavy autumn leaf fall, ensuring nothing pools against the lowest timber courses.
